Dr. Eva Benmeleh offers gifted testing for children entering kindergarten through
high school. Test results are provided within the same week of the evaluation.
Information about the Gifted Evaluation Process
Giftedness is considered when the child earns a minimum Intelligence Quotient (IQ) score of 130 and above. That is two standard deviations above the mean (average). This rule states that a gifted student is “one who has superior intellectual development and is capable of high
performance.”
If you have any questions regarding this process, please do not hesitate to contact me 786-383-4942.
Screening Process for Gifted Testing:
Regardless of parent request, the school will screen students who show unusual ability using two or more of the following criteria:
- High academic achievement, as indicated by standardized test 89 percentile or higher or Levels 4 or 5 or course work grades of A or B
- Above-average creative output in artistic, literary, scientific, or mathematics endeavors
- Very rapid learning rate or unusually insightful conclusions
- Multiple nominations from teachers and staff who observe unique talent
- Parental reports of advanced developmental behavior, such as early reading, verbal precocity and use of complex syntax, or evidence of a mechanical aptitude
- Outstanding academic, creative, or leadership abilities, self-reported or peer reported
Plan B for Gifted Placement:
If your child qualifies for a free/reduced lunch program at school and/or has limited English proficiency (ELL), then a minimum IQ score of 115 is necessary to qualify for gifted. Ethnicity is not considered mandatory to take into consideration anymore.
Please speak with your child’s school department for more information regarding how to qualify for free or reduced lunch (usually it is done by completing a form at the beginning of every school year). As well as if your child qualifies for ESOL or ELL and the acceptance of a lower IQ score for consideration for gifted placement.
If the student’s IQ is believed to be within the gifted range of 130 and above, private evaluation will speed up the process because the child will have met the general requirements for gifted placement.
